The FLUKA Monte Carlo, non–perturbative QCD and Cosmic Ray cascades

چکیده
The FLUKA Monte Carlo code, presently used in cosmic ray physics, contains packages to sample soft hadronic processes which are built according to the Dual Parton Model. This is a phenomenological model capable of reproducing many of the features of hadronic collisions in the non perturbative QCD regime. The basic principles of the model are summarized and, as an example, the associated Λ–K production is discussed. This is a process which has some relevance for the calculation of atmospheric neutrino fluxes.

A Monte Carlo Calculation of Muon Flux at Ground Level from Primary Cosmic Gamma Rays
The Monte Carlo program FLUKA was used to calculate the number of muons reaching detection level in events initiated by primary cosmic gamma ray interactions in the atmosphere. The calculation was motivated by the desire to gauge the sensitivity of arrays like that of Project GRAND to primary gamma cosmic rays while measuring single muons at detection level. Because direct gamma pair production...
متن کاملPredicting Neutron Production from Cosmic-ray Muons
Fast neutrons from cosmic-ray muons are an important background to underground low energy experiments. The estimate of such background is often hampered by the difficulty of measuring and calculating neutron production with sufficient accuracy. Indeed substantial disagreement exists between the different analytical calculations performed so far, while data reported by different experiments is n...
متن کاملCosmic-Ray Events as Background in Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes
The dominant background for observations of γ-rays in the energy region above 50 GeV with Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes are cosmic-ray events. The images of most of the cosmic ray showers look significantly different from those of γ-rays and are therefore easily discriminated. However, a small fraction of events seems to be indistinguishable from γ-rays. This constitutes an irreducib...
متن کاملComparison of Fluka-2006 Monte Carlo Simulation and Flight data for the ATIC detector
We have performed a detailed Monte Carlo (MC) simulation for the Advanced Thin Ionization Calorimeter (ATIC) detector using the MC code FLUKA-2006 which is capable of simulating particles up to 10 PeV. The ATIC detector has completed two successful balloon flights from McMurdo, Antarctica lasting a total of more than 35 days. ATIC is designed as a multiple, long duration balloon flight, investi...
متن کاملAll-particle energy spectrum of KASCADE-Grande based on shower size and different hadronic interaction models
KASCADE-Grande is a large detector array for observations of the energy spectrum as well as the chemical composition of cosmic ray air showers up to primary energies of 1 EeV. The multi-detector arrangement allows to measure the electromagnetic and muonic components for individual air showers. In this analysis, the reconstruction of the all-particle energy spectrum is based on the size spectra ...
